west virginia big 12

West virginia big 12 - West Virginia has applied for admission to the Big 12 and has been accepted, sources confirmed to Sporting News Tuesday. The Charleston Daily Mail first reported WVU's conference change.

WVU would have to pay the Big East’s current exit fee of $5 million and would be expected to uphold the same 27-month wait that Syracuse and Pitt, which left for the ACC, most comply with.

Sources told the Daily Mail that the decision has been approved on both sides. WVU officials will meet today to discuss the resolution and an announcement will likely be made when Missouri says it will leave the Big 12 for the SEC.

The remaining football playing schools in the Big East are Connecticut, Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida, Louisville and Cincinnati.

According to CBSSports.com, Big East officials met two days ago with Houston, SMU, Boise State, UCF and Navy. Air Force, which is said to also be a Big East target, was not represented at the meeting. There is some thought that Boise State would like to see BYU included in Big East expansion, allowing the conference to form two divisions, CBSSports.com reported. However, it is unclear whether BYU, which is independent, is interested in the Big East.

The western teams would be: BYU, Boise State, Louisville, Air Force, Houston and SMU. The eastern teams would be: UConn, Rutgers, South Florida, UCF, Cincinnati and Navy.
